1/ Ăn khế trả vàng - The golden star fruit tree

Once upon a time, there was a very rich man who lived in a village. When he died, he left his two sons a huge fortune. But the two brothers were entirely different. The elder was greedy, but the younger was very kind. So after the parents' death, the elder claimed the fortune and left his younger brother only star fruit tree. The younger brother took good care of his tree, watering it every day and hoping that it would give him a lot of fruit so that he could make a living by selling it. The elder brother, on the other hand, was so happy with his inheritance that he had nothing to worry about.

Unfortunately for the younger brother, when the fruit was ripe, a raven flew by and stopped in the tree to eat it. He was very sad to see this happen every day, but he did not know what to do. So one day, he decided to stand beneath the tree an speak to the raven: "Raven, please don't eat my fruit." he called.

"This fruit tree is my only fortune. If you eat the fruit, my family will starve."

"Don't worry," the raven answered. "I'll pay you back in gold. Go and make yourself a bag 60 centimeters long to keep the gold."

Hearing those words, he was very excited and told his wife to make a bag of 60 centimeters. The next day, the raven came as he had promised. He landed by the gate, let the younger brother sit on his back, and took off for a place filled with gold. There the younger brother filled the bag with gold. Then he flew back home on the raven's back. And so he became very rich. But he still loved and respected his elder brother.

So one day he told his wife to prepare a good meal for his brother and his family. But when he invited his brother, the latter refused to come at first. The brother only accepted after he had begged him again and again. When the older brother arrived at his house, he was surprised to see it all changed. It was no longer the poor house that he had seen before. So he asked his younger brother the reason. The latter told him everything that happened. After he heard it all, he offered to trade all his fortune for the fruit-tree. The kind brother gladly accepted the offer.

The raven came as usual. The greedy brother spoke to the raven the same words as his brother and received the same answer from the raven. But he was so greedy that he made a much larger bag instead of a 60 centimeter bag. The next day, the raven came to take him to place of gold. After he had filled the bag, he filled all his pockets, too, before he climbed onto the raven's back to go home. But the load was so heavy that when they flew over the sea, the raven tilted his tired wings and dropped him off into the sea. His wife and younger brother waited and waited but did not see him come back. So they decided to ask the raven and learn all the facts.

2/ Sự tích quả dưa hấu - The legend of watermelon

Once upon a time, An-Tiem, the sixth son of King Hung Vuong the Fifth, disobeyed the King and was exiled to a deserted island.

There, the young Prince had to build his own shelter, dig a well for water, fish and hunt animals for food. One day, he found plants bearing round green fruits about the size of a soccer ball. He split one fruit and saw the red flesh inside. He did not consume it fearing that the fruit might be poisonous.

Days passed and the dry, sunny season came. It was so hot that all the plants became dried up and the well had no water left. One day An-Tiem was so tired and thirsty that he tried the fruit for the first time. He found out that it tasted delicious and quenched his thirst. So he tried to grow the plant around his house. Soon the whole island was covered with the green fruits. An-Tiem carved the island's name and his own on some of the fruits and threw them into the sea. Later, seafarers found the strange fruit floating with An-Tiem's name on them.

Soon, words about the fruit reached the mainland and many merchants tried to find the way to the island. This then turned the deserted island into a busy place. The island was now bustling with boats and people coming and going daily. An-Tiem would help anyone who wished to settle on the island.

Eventually the story about An-Tiem's island and its new fruit reached King Hung Vuong. Hearing this, the King was very proud of his son who was brave and strong enough to overcome difficulties without anyone's help. An-Tiem was immediately summoned back to the court. He brought the fruit for the King, his father. The King then pardoned his son's misbehavior in the past, gave him his crown to make him King Hung Vuong VI.

The fruit was since then called "dua hau" and has become the symbol of luck. People often buy dua hau as a present to their relatives and friends in the New Year.

3/ Cô bé quàng khăng đỏ - Little red riding hood

Little Red Riding Hood lived in a wood with her mother. One day Little Red Riding Hood went to visit her granny. She had a nice cake in her basket. On her way Little Red Riding Hood met a wolf.

“Hello!” said the wolf.

“Where are you going?”

“I’m going to see my grandmother. She lives in a house behind those trees.”

The wolf ran to Granny’s house and ate Granny up. He got into Granny’s bed. A little later, Little Red Riding Hood reached the house. She looked at the wolf.

“Granny, what big eyes you have!” “All the better to see you with!” said the wolf.

“Granny, what big ears you have!” “All the better to hear you with!” said the wolf.

“Granny, what a big nose you have!” “All the better to smell you with!” said the wolf.

“Granny, what big teeth you have!” “All the better to eat you with!” shouted the wolf.

A woodcutter was in the wood. He heard a loud scream and ran to the house. The woodcutter hit the wolf over the head. The wolf opened his mouth wide and shouted and Granny jumped out. The wolf ran away and Little Red Riding Hood never saw the wolf again.

4/ Cậu bé Jack và cây đậu thần - Jack and the beanstalk

Once upon a time there was a boy called Jack. He lived with his mother. They were very poor. All they had was a cow.

One morning, Jack’s mother told Jack to take their cow to market and sell her. On the way, Jack met a man. He gave Jack some magic beans for the cow.

Jack took the beans and went back home. When Jack’s mother saw the beans she was very angry. She threw the beans out of the window

The next morning, Jack looked out of the window. There was a giant beanstalk. He went outside and started to climb the beanstalk.

He climbed up to the sky through the clouds. Jack saw a beautiful castle. He went inside. Jack heard a voice. “Fee, Fi, Fo, Fum!”

Jack ran into a cupboard. An enormous giant came into the room and sat down. On the table there was a hen and a golden harp. “Lay!” said the giant. The hen laid an egg. It was made of gold.

“Sing!” said the giant. The harp began to sing. Soon the giant was asleep. Jack jumped out of the cupboard. He took the hen and the harp. Suddenly, the harp sang, “Help, master!”

The giant woke up and shouted, “Fee, Fi, Fo, Fum!” Jack ran and started climbing down the beanstalk. The giant came down after him.

Jack shouted, “Mother, help!” Jack’s mother took an axe and chopped down the beanstalk. The giant fell and crashed to the ground. Nobody ever saw him again.

With the golden eggs and the magic harp, Jack and his mother lived happily ever after.

5/ Nàng lọ lem - Cinderella

Once upon a time, there was a kind girl named Cinderella.

All of the animals loved her, especially two mice named Gus and Jaq. They'd do anything for the girl they called Cinderelly.

Cinderella lived with her stepmother and her two stepsisters, Anastasia and Drizella. They were very mean to Cinderella, making her work all day cleaning, sewing, and cooking. She tried her best to make them happy.

Cinderella's stepmother, Lady Tremaine, was cold, cruel, and jealous of Cinderella’s charm and beauty. She enjoyed giving Cinderella extra chores to do, such as bathing her cat, Lucifer.

One day, a messenger arrived with a special invitation. There was going to be a royal ball at the palace! he King wanted his son to find a bride. Every young woman in the kingdom was invited, including Cinderella!

Cinderella was very excited about the ball. In the attic, she found a dress that had belonged to her mother. It was a bit old-fashioned, but Cinderella could make it beautiful!

Lady Tremaine didn't want Cinderella to go to the ball. She wanted the Prince to meet Anastasia and Drizella. Maybe he would marry one of them! Lady Tremaine kept Cinderella busy with chores that would take her all night to finish.

While Cinderella was working, the mice and birds fixed her dress. They added ribbons and beads that the two stepsisters had thrown away. Cinderella was overjoyed when she saw the dress. Now she could go to the ball!

"Oh, thank you so much!" Cinderella said to Gus, Jaq, and the birds.

When the stepsisters saw their old ribbons and beads on Cinderella's dress, they flew into a rage. They ripped the dress and pulled off the beads. Lady Tremaine didn't stop them.

Cinderella ran away to the garden to cry. Suddenly, her fairy godmother appeared. With a wave of her wand, she turned a pumpkin into an elegant coach. Cinderella could now go to the ball, but her dress was still ruined.

"Bibbidi-bobbidi-boo!" said the Fairy Godmother, waving her wand again.

Cinderella was now wearing a beautiful gown and sparkling glass slippers. But all of this came with a warning: When the clock struck midnight, the magic spell would wear off!

At the ball, Prince Charming couldn't take his eyes off Cinderella. The orchestra played, and the Prince began to dance with the wonderful girl whose name he still didn't know. For Cinderella, the night was a dream come true.

Before too long, the clock began to strike midnight.

"Good-bye!" Cinderella said, hurrying away.

"Come back!" called the Prince. "I don't even know your name!"

As Cinderella fled, one of her glass slippers came off.

The Prince sent the Grand Duke to find the girl who fit the glass slipper. Lady Tremaine locked Cinderella in the attic, but Cinderella's mouse friends freed her.

Then Lady Tremaine tripped the Grand Duke, and the glass slipper shattered . . . but Cinderella had the other in her pocket. And it fit!

Cinderella and the Prince were soon married. Everyone rejoiced, including Cinderella's mouse friends, who wore special outfits to the wedding. Prince Charming and Cinderella lived happily ever after.
